Weakness as the focul point

I needed to find a structure to my performance, something which would hold my performances together, something I could return to within my performance so that I had a direction in which to move. I have decided to focus on the weakness I have when it comes to people commenting of joking about my hair [or lack of it].

The performance will not be some kind of egotistical self help piece, in which I relate all the failure or greatness in my life to the weakness around me. Instead, I will move through my story, of having hair and then having less throughout time. The ‘weakness’ will appear throughout the piece subtly , but not frequently.

The weakness I will create and develop in the piece will in some way centre around my ability to joke about the issue and in a sense shrug it off, as well as what I do to my appearance to help the issue of balding. Throughout the performance I aim to travel both backwards and forward in my life and look at situations, people and my own opinions and ideas at that time. Within all these scenarios, I will relate the main aspects of that segment to the weakness I had, have or will have and then move back to a point which is clearly marked to the audience, so that they know I am now in the room with them and not somewhere else in my story.

The structural idea I have at the minute, in relation to moving backwards and forward as well as creating an epicentre in which to talk direct to the audience is [so far] as follows:

* I will stand dead centre to the audience when addressing them directly, this is the position I will start at to introduce them to this notion.

* When travelling back in time to other situations, I will move over to my right [the audiences left] and move through the different situations over there, moving back to the centre when I am finished of want to address the audience.

* When travelling forward in time to other scenarios, I will move over to my left [the audiences right] and move through the different situations over there, moving back to the centre when I am finished of want to address the audience.

Throughout the performance and whilst travelling Backwards and Forwards in time, I shall add different people within my life and describe the situation I was in and how it related to my hair and my ‘weakness’.  As of yet, I do not know how to portray the people within my story. Do I rein-act the scene and create a rough portrayal of them, or do I enter the scenario and their voice can be heard through the speakers in the studio? This is something I still have to investigate and try out.
